Gordian III. AD 238-244. AR Antoninianus (21mm, 4.2 g, 1h). Antioch mint. 1st series, AD 238-239. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / P M TR P II COS P P, Gordian standing left, holding transverse scepter and sacrificing with patera over altar to left. Bland, Gordian III 33; cf. RIC IV 37 (Rome mint); cf. RSC 210 (same). Areas of weak strike. Good VF. Extremely rare type for Antioch – only one known to Bland, seemingly only Rome mint issues on CoinArchives. |
