FRANCE, Royal. François, Duc de Guise. 1519-1563. Æ Medal (52mm, 52.71 g, 12h). The Siege of Metz. By an uncertain medallist. Dated 1552, though struck circa 1600-1635 or later. FRANCISCVS DVX GVISIVS *, armored bust right, wearing ruff / 1552 · HÆC · * TIBI * META *, city view of Metz. Jones I 227. Brown surfaces. EF.

Jones attributes this piece to the medal workshop at the Monnaie du Moulin, arguing that, based on the technical skill required to produce them, they were actually struck in the early 17th century, well after the event that the medal commemorates. The present example matches the strike and die state of that illustrated by Jones. However, as no detailed study of the series has been undertaken, it cannot be precisely determined if this is an original or a somewhat later restrike. In any case, it is an elegantly engraved and superbly struck medal.
