PHRYGIA, Docimeium. Severan era, AD 193-235. Æ (35mm, 18.28 g, 7h). ΔOKIMOC, laureate head of Dokimos right / ΔOKIMEΩN MAKEΔONΩN, ΠEPⳞIⳞ, Cybele standing facing, head left, turreted, holding patera and drum; in the background to left and right, Mount Persis. Unpublished in the standard references. Earthen green-brown patina, a few cleaning scratches. VF. Extremely rare.

Antigonos Dokimos was a general under Antigonus and later, as governor in Phrygia, founded the city of Docimeium. Many of the original inhabitants were men from his army, Macedonians, thus the reverse inscription honor their heritage. The city was located near the base of Mt. Persis and became famous for its marble quarries. Many of the second and third century temples in Rome were built from Dokimeion marble.
