Lucius Appuleius Saturninus. 104 BC. AR Brockage Denarius (19mm, 3.64 g, 9h). Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma left / Incuse of obverse. Cf. Crawford 317/3a; cf. Sydenham 578; cf. Appuleia 1 var.; RBW –. Toned with traces of find patina, light marks and scratches, hint of luster. VF. Rare brockage rotation.

From the Wettmark Collection, purchased from Divus Numismatik (ND).

Most brockages are typically seen struck at 12 o’clock, a mirror image of the opposite side. This coin has a 9 o’clock die axis; the obverse flan must have stuck to the hammer, rotated, and struck another coin already in place on the anvil. This type of rotated brockage is extremely rare.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
