BITHYNIA, Nicaea. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. Æ Assarion (24mm, 7.29 g, 7h). Laureate head right / Turreted and draped bust of the nymph Nicaea wearing ivy wreath. RG 177; RPC IV.1 Online 5943. Brown patina, light pitting. VF. Very rare, only four known to RPC.

From the J.-P. Righetti Collection.

Only two of the four specimens known to RPC have available images and both show her wearing a fully turreted crown. This specimen does not, but does have the turreted tower worn as a crown seen on other types. This could simply be a die variation but may well be an unpublished type. The coin matches the description of the two references given in every other way.

Closing Date and Time: 4 January 2023 at 12:39:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 20% buyer’s fee.
