215, Lot: 512. Estimate $500.
Sold for $465. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Alexius I Comnenus. 1081-1118. Æ Tetarteron (19mm, 2.15 g, 11h). Uncertain mint (Thessalonica or Philippopolis?). Struck 1092-1118. Crowned facing bust, holding cruciform scepter and globus cruciger / Φ-[A]-M-Δ around jeweled cross with an X in the center. DOC -; SB -; Lanz 132, lot 615 (same dies). Near VF, green patina that is rubbed a bit on the high points. Extremely rare.

This extremely rare specimen most closely resembles DOC 40, which features the letters C-Φ-M-Δ around a jeweled cross with globules at the terminations set on three steps. The example sold in Lanz 132 was tentatively placed under Philippopolis due to that mints output of coins of particular types and unusual style.
