KINGS of BOSPOROS. Rheskouporis V. AD 314/5-341/2 or 342/3. Æ Stater (17mm, 4.31 g). Diademed bust of king right; trident before / Smoothed field, engraved with +. Fine. Rare with such alteration.

Another stater inscribed with a different pattern was sold in CNG XXXIII, lot 1883. That coin (weighing 4.24) has a stellate pattern or Christogram engraved on the reverse. If the latter interpretation is correct it would be natural to assume the design on the current coin represents a Greek cross, making it a rare and highly interesting early Christian artifact. The weights and designs of future specimens will shed further light on these interesting alterations.
