PADUAN MEDALS(?), Vitellius/Antoninus Pius. Possibly by Giovanni Cavino. 1500-1570. Æ ‘Sestertius’ (34mm, 22.87 g, 6h). Laureate and draped bust right / Round shrine. Klawans -. Good VF, brown patina, area of edge irregularity around 4h. Original strike.

This unusual medal seems to be in the style of the Paduan school of engravers following Cavino. At first glance the types appear to be overstruck, with the Pius atop the Vitellius, yet the complete legend for Vitellius is perplexing. The legend does not appear to match any of the dies illustrated in Klawans, nor is the reverse type recorded there.
