285, Lot: 74. Estimate $150.
Sold for $130. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

BOEOTIA, Federal Coinage. Circa 395-340 BC. AR Hemidrachm (15mm, 2.50 g, 11h). Boeotian shield / Kantharos; above, club right; BO-I across lower field; to lower right, vertical crescent facing left; all within concave circle. Cf. BCD Boiotia 40 (style of shield); SNG Copenhagen 177. Good VF, toned, scratches and light surface granularity.

Ex Nicholas V. Jamgochian Collection (Peus 340, 2 November 1994), lot 236.

There is a degree of stylistic variety regarding the treatment of the shield on the issues with a crescent. This is to not be discounted, as BCD notes: “One cannot avoid thinking that these crescent issues were struck at different times or by different mints, or both.” The treatment on the current coin is much closer to BCD 42, with carries a voided crescent on the reverse.
