Extremely Rare Dynastic Issue

299, Lot: 53. Estimate $200.
Sold for $320. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Septimius Severus, with Geta as Caesar. AD 193-211. Æ Tetrassarion (28mm, 10.94 g, 8h). • Λ • CЄΠ • C[ЄBHPOC?] Π, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Septimius right / ΛOY [CЄY] ΓЄTAN ΘЄCCAΛOI, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Geta right; Δ (mark of value) below. Burrer, MA-G 9 = BCD Thessaly II 968 var.; this type otherwise unpublished. Fine, rough green patina, smoothing and cleaning marks. Extremely rare.

From the BCD Collection.

Similar to the unique tetrassarion we sold in Triton XV (hammer of $500) and from the same reverse die, but on that coin the bust of Septimius is seen from behind. Additionally, there is no trace of “AY” or “AYT” that one would expect to begin the legend, unless very tiny letters were engraved at the rough patch below the bust at 6 o’clock.
