THESSALY, Koinon of Thessaly. Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. Æ Triassarion (22mm, 6.90 g, 6h). Struck AD 193-211. IOYΛIA ΔO-MNA AY[ΓOY], draped bust right / KOINO/N ΘЄCCAΛ/ωN, Athena Itonia, hurling [spear held in her right hand], shield on her left arm, driving triga galloping right; Γ (mark of value) below horses. Cf. Burrer, MA-G 19; BCD Thessaly II –; BCD Thessaly I –; Rogers –. Near VF, rough black patina. Rare.

From the BCD Collection.

See BCD Thessaly II 970 for a similar type with Nike driving the triga. The image for no. 19 of Dr. Burrer’s unpublished listing of the League’s coinage from Marcus Aurelius through Gallienus appears to be from the same obverse die and has the same arrangement of the reverse legend, but the figure driving the triga is entirely unclear.

From the same obverse die as the following lot, a diassarion.
