SICILY, Akragas. Circa 465/4-446 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 17.15 g 12). ΑΚΡΑC - ΑΝΤΟΣ (
partially retrograde) Eagle standing left with closed wings.
Rev. Crab within a shallow circular incuse. SNG ANS 979. SNG Copenhagen 41. SNG Oxford 1669. A splendid example, perfectly struck and very well centered. Good extremely fine.
From the Mieza collection, ex Gemini III, 9 January 2007, 51.
The early tetradrachms of Akragas were issued in fairly large numbers, but their chief characteristic is that they were rapidly and carelessly struck (usually on flans that were too small for their dies) and were often well used. Perfectly centered and struck pieces showing no wear are, in fact, very rare: the present piece is one of the finest examples known.
