Sold for $340. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

Special issues. Q. Oppius. 45 BC. Æ Dupondius(?) (28mm, 16.54 g, 12h). Italian(?) mint. Diademed head of Venus right; capricorn behind / Victory advancing left, head right, holding palm frond and plate of fruit. Crawford 550/2d; CRI 507; RPC I 602; Sydenham 1277a. Near VF, green and brown surfaces.

Duplicates from the RBW Collection. Privately purchased from Leu, July 1980.

The dating and location of the mint for this issue remains conjectural. Crawford assigns the coinage to Cilicia in 88 BC, Sydenham calls them Syrian issues of the late triumval period, and the authors of RPC assign them to an uncertain Italian mint circa 45 BC.
