Fourth Known

311, Lot: 16. Estimate $150.
Sold for $1100. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Atrax. Mid 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (16mm, 3.26 g, 10h). Head of the nymph Bura right, wearing earring; ΓY below chin / ATPA–ΓIΩN, lion walking right. Rogers –; BCD Thessaly II 58.14 (same dies); BCD Thessaly I 1031 (same dies). Good VF, brown patina, minor roughness on cheek, reverse double struck. Extremely rare.

From the BCD Collection.

Perhaps only the fourth known and the second finest after the slightly better Nomos specimen (BCD Thessaly I 1031, which hammered at CHF 850). Another was sold in CNG 85, lot 315 (which fetched $1200), where it was described as a joint issue with Gonnos. As noted in the Nomos sale, the striking of the lion type for both cities (see lot 34 for the Gonnos type) does not necessarily imply that there was a joint issue.
