311, Lot: 34. Estimate $150.
Sold for $320. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

THESSALY, Gonnos. Mid-late 4th century BC. Æ Dichalkon (18mm, 4.79 g, 7h). Head of nymph right, wearing earring / ΓONNE–[ΩN], lion advancing right. Rogers 226 corr. (exergual portion of legend not noted); BCD Thessaly II 76.2. Good VF, dark green patina. Rare.

From the BCD Collection.

A note from BCD from the Triton sale: One may assume that the lions were a threat to the sheep population at Gonnos and having one on the coins would be a useful reminder for the shepherds to watch out for them and at the same time an attempt to exorcise them.
