SICILY, Leontini. Circa 440-430 BC. AR Tetradrachm (26mm, 15.86 g, 5h). Laureate head of Apollo right; shell behind / Head of roaring lion right; four barley grains around. Cf. Boehringer, Münzgeschichte 52 (for obv. die, different rev. type); SNG ANS –; SNG Lloyd 1059 (same dies); De Sartiges 105 (same dies); Warren 250 (same dies); cf. HGC 2, 669 (for obv. die, different rev. type). VF, toned, some surface corrosion and marks.

The shell behind the head of Apollo was added to the die after it had already seen extensive use. None of the specimens cited above have the shell.
