ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Hemiobol (7mm, 0.42 g). Head right, with short hair, wearing Corinthian helmet / Star of eight long rays in incuse square. CNG 84, lot 640; Gorny & Mosch 176, 1246; otherwise unpublished. VF, lightly toned, porous. Extremely rare.
From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 262 (17 August 2011), lot 132; Classical Numismatic Group 84 (5 May 2010), lot 640.
In the Gorny sale, the head on the obverse is identified as Athena, but the clearly short hair makes such a determination unlikely. Nevertheless, the style and fabric of this coin suggests a mint in northwest Asia Minor, perhaps Ionia.
