ALEXIUS I. 1081-1118. AR Histamenon Nomisma (4.31 gm). Thessalonica mint. Struck circa 1081-1082. Nimbate bust of Christ / Nimbate and armored figure of St. Demetrius, standing right, presenting labarum to Alexius, standing facing, wearing crown and loros. DOC IV 4; SB 1904. Good VF, well struck with much of the legend clearly visible. "Extremely rare" in SBwith no price listed. ($500)

According to DOC, this was the very brief first coinage of the Thessalonica mint, which Alexius opened as he passed through in September 1081 on his way to battle the Normans. The issue ended in 1082, when a significant debasement of the coinage occurred.
