TUDOR. Mary. 1553-1554. Cast Æ Medal (33mm, 22.51 g, 12h). By Stuart or G. D. Gaab (after J. Jonghelinck). Restitution issue, struck circa 1750 (possibly commemorating the bicentennial of her marriage). Collared bust of Mary left, wearing jeweled cap and veil and embroidered dress / Engraved Queen MARY. MI 72/19; Eimer –. Near EF, lightly chased as made.

The original having been commissioned to Jacopo da Trezzo, a smaller marriage medal modeled after this was contemporaneously done by Jacques Jonghelink, who would serve as a seal-cutter in the early court of Philip II. In turn, a copy of this medal was reissued during the mid-18th century, likely the work of Stuart or Gaab, and possibly in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the marriage between Philip and Mary.
