GAUL, Massalia. Circa late third century BC. Æ 21mm (7.68 gm). Helmeted head of Athena right / Tripod. SNG Copenhagen 740. VF, green patina.

From the David Freedman Collection.

The modern city of Marseille, Massilia was one of the many Greek outposts which had been established during the Greek emigration of the eighth and seventh centuries BC. From here, Greek merchants traded with Gallic tribes northward along the Rhone River, and thereby exercised a profound influence by connecting these cultures with that of the Mediterranean. Later allied with Rome, the city became a flash point during the Civil Wars when, under the command of Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, the grandfather of the emperor Nero, it supported Pompey against Caesar.
