JUDAEA, Herodians. Agrippa II, with Domitian. Circa 50-100 CE. Æ (27mm, 8.82 g, 6h). Caesarea Maritima (or Rome?) mint. Dated year 25 of Agrippa’s first era (84/5 CE). IMP [CAES DIVI VESP F DOMI]TIAN AVG G[ER COS XII], laureate head right / SA[L]VTI EΠ[I] BA A[ΓPI AVGVS]T, square altar; ET - KE (date) across field, S C in exergue. Meshorer 154; Hendin 1319; RPC II 2266. Fine, rough green-brown patina. Rare.
A peculiar issue imitating Roman ases but with legends in Latin and Greek. Hendin (p. 307) notes: “Some theories suggest that these coins were minted in Rome, others suggest that the dies were made there or locally by Roman artisans and struck at Caesarea Maritima.”
