CLAUDIUS. 41-54 AD. Æ Sestertius (36mm, 29.03 gm). Rome mint. Struck circa 42-54 AD. Laureate head of Claudius right; c/m: NCAPR in rectangluar incuse behind head / Legend in four lines within oak wreath. RIC I 112; Cohen 38. Fine, brown patina, clear countermark. From the Garth R. Drewry Collection (purchased 10 September 1970).

This countermark, read 'Nero Caesar Augustus probavit', apparently was applied early in the reign of Nero when the senatorial mint was idle, probably as a confirmation that the particular Aes coin in circulation was authentic.
