Sold for $635. This amount does not include the buyer’s fee.

NERO. 54-68 AD. Æ Sestertius (35mm, 26.31 gm). Balkan mint, perhaps Perinthus(?). Laureate head right / Nero on horseback right, holding spear; behind him, soldier on horseback right, holding vexillum. RIC I -; RPC I -; RPC Suppl. -. Unpublished variety. Nice VF, green patina, light obverse porosity, reverse double-struck. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Auction 42 (29-30 May 1997), lot 840.

The cataloguer of this coin commented in 1997 that "[the] style appears regular and unlike the imitative issues of the period." With the appearance of many Balkan mint issues on the market during the last several years, he would like to retract this statement. The slightly concave obverse, the central demple and previously unrecorded legend conforms to other recent examples with a probable eastern European provenance.
