MICHAEL VII. 1071-1078 AD. Fourré Tetarteron Nomisma (16mm, 2.74 gm). Constantinople mint. Facing bust of Mary, holding medallion of infant Christ / Facing busts of Michael and Maria, holding long cross between them. DOC III 5a; SB 1872. VF.

Because of rampant inflation, this issue became more and more debased with the passing of time, and it is therefore not uncommon to see coins which are of a very pale gold color. Thus, it may be that this fourrée is actually a product of the Constantinople mint and not simply just a contemporary forgery.
