[Medals] ITALY, Papal States. Paul III. 1534-1549. Æ Medallion (42mm, 35.29 g, 12h). Restrike, dated AN(no) IOBILAEO MDL (1550). Bare-headed bust right, wearing cope and morse, cope decorated with scene of opening the Holy Door / •AN• IOBI-LAEO •M•D•L•, •PETRO•APOST• PRINC•C• in two lines in exergue, façade of St. Peter's Basilica. Cf. Pollard 532/525 (obv./rev.) EF, brown patina with traces of coppery undertone. Trace of original MAX in exergue still visible.

Shortly before his death, Paul III proclaimed a Jubilee Year. The following year, it was opened by Pope Julius III. At this time, several earlier types of Paul III, including the reverse of this medal were restruck, all now with the addition of AN IOBILAEO MDL, the Jubilee Year.
