COLOMBIA. Provincial Coinage, Republic. 1820-1823. Cundinamarca Province. 8 Reales (39mm, 24.43 g, 6h). Bogota mint. Dated 1821 Ba JF. REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA • 1821•, feathered indian head left / CUNDINAMARCA • Ba • J • F, 8 R across fields, pomegranate. KM C6. VF, toned, soft strike but better than usual.

The KM reference does little to clarify this confusing period in South and Central American History. They list this issue as "PRE-REPUBLICAN - REPUBLIC of COLOMBIA / Provincial Coinage." This coinage belongs to the period before Simon Bolivar's "Republic of Gran Colombia" which issued coins inscribed REPUBLICA DE COLOMBIA from 1823 until 1836. Beginning in 1831, until about 1858, Colombia was known as Nueva Granada. However, provisional (not to be confused with provincial) coins very similar to this, but with NUEVA GRANADA legends, are issued in 1819 and 1820.
