Ex 1743 Hollandia wreck.

The disastrous wreck of the VOC ship Hollandia in 1743 off the British isles of Scilly was largely forgotten until an expedition was mounted in the early 1970s to search for the treasure of over 35,000 silver coins. During that time, a substantial portion of the treasure was recovered along with other artifacts from the wreck that claimed the lives of the entire ship’s company of three hundred and six. The treasure was largely composed of Mexican-minted Spanish 8 Reales. But it also included a minority of other issues including Dukatons of the Spanish Netherlands such as this example. While impossible to say definitively without additional evidence, this piece features sea salvaged wear consistent with specimens from the famous wreck and reportedly came from the large famous treasure.
