SICILY, Messana. 278-276 BC. Æ Litra (21.3mm, 6.12 g, 1h). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress / Lion standing right, left forepaw raised; club above, race-torch in exergue. Caltabiano Series XXI, 932 var. (D30/R– [unlisted rev. die]); CNS 24 corr. (monogram; same obv. die as illustration); HGC 2, 839 corr. (some with head right); SNG Morcom 622 var. (Herakles left). Green patina with earthen highlights, edge chips on reverse. Good VF. Extremely rare variety; of the 40 plated specimens in Caltabiano, only two have a right-facing Herakles; this coin is considerably finer than either. One, of inferior quality, in CoinArchives.

From the John Morcom Collection, purchased from Numismatica Ars Classica, 29 January 2009.
