KINGS of PERSIS. Baydād (Bagadat). Early 3rd century BC. AR Drachm (17mm, 4.13 g, 9h). Near-contemporary counterfeit?. Uncertain mint. Head right, with short beard, mustache, and earring, wearing kyrbasia with flaps tied behind; traces of divergent curved ties to left / Fire temple of Ahura-Mazda; to left, figure standing right in prayer; standard to right; symbol to outer left; fire altar with stepped battlements. Cf. van't Haaff, Persis, Type 516a (for obv. type); otherwise unpublished in the standard references. Find patina, slight double strike on obverse, crystalized surfaces. VF. Extremely rare, none in CoinArchives or Zeno. |
