Carausius. Romano-British Emperor, AD 286-293. Antoninianus (21.5mm, 4.35 g, 6h). ‘C’ mint. Radiate and draped bust right / Carausius seated left on curule chair, holding globe and parazonium; MC. Cf. RIC V 188 (for similar issue); Malcolm Lyne, “Some New Coin Types of Carausius and Allectus and the History of the British Provinces: AD 286-296” in NC 2003, p. 153 and pl. 26, 8 (this coin). Dark brown patina, some weakness. Good VF. Extremely rare. Possibly unique variety. Regrettably, as with the similar BM example, the actual date is obscured by weakness in the legend. |
