CAROLINGIANS. Louis 'le Pieux' (the Pious). As Emperor Louis I, 814-840. AR Denier (20mm, 1.69 g, 6h). Class 3. Unspecified (Tours?) mint. Struck 822/3-840. + HLVDOVVICVS IMP, cross pattée; pellets in quarters / XPISTIANA RELIGIO
, temple façade. Coupland, Money Group N; Depeyrot 1179; cf. M&G 472; MEC 1, –. Lightly toned. Good VF.
From the Simon Coupland Collection.
This coin was discovered in a small hoard of Christiana religio coins of Louis the Pious at Seine-l'Abbaye (Côte-d’Or) in 2011, and the hoard was published in Numismatic Chronicle 173 (2013) (pp. 349-358, pl. 62, no. 8). This coin, and the group to which it belongs (Coupland Group N) is attributed - with some hesitation - to St Martin in Tours, on the basis of the group's stylistic similarity to coins of Charles the Bald from that mint. The coins are characterised by small, neat lettering, a small obverse cross, sometimes with a gap between the inner circle of pellets and the inscription, and a compact, squarish temple with a right-angled roof. [S. Coupland]
