Kusonoke Masashige was a samurai who fought to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate in the Genkō War (1331-1333). With the opening of Japan and the reign of the Meiji Emperor in the late 19th century, Masashige came to be revered as the ideal of samurai loyalty to the Emperor. He also appears on contemporary bank notes.
