UNCERTAIN EAST. 4th century BC. AR Unit (11mm, 2.79 g, 2h). Imitating Athens. Helmeted head of Athena right / Owl standing right, head facing; olive spray to left; all within incuse circle. Unpublished in the standard references. Lightly toned, compact flan, slightly off center, minor metal flaws. Near VF.

Ex GMRH Collection, purchased from Poignsignon Numismatique, 2002.

The style of this piece has some parallels to Athenian imitations from Philistia and Baktria. However, the Philistian issues are only known with square incuses, and typically have letters or symbols added to the types, which could be present to the right of the owl. There are some Baktrian issues that have a circular incuse, but those are consistently struck on the Attic standard, unlike the present coin.

Closing Date and Time: 15 July 2020 at 10:51:00 ET.
