Anonymous. 211-208 BC. AR Victoriatus (17mm, 3.27 g, 1h). Uncertain mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right / Victory standing right, crowning trophy; ROM[A] in exergue. Crawford 90/2 = Crawford, Early 190; Schaefer & Friedman Fig. 24; Sydenham 83; RSC –; RBW –. Lightly toned, edge a bit ragged, thin die break on the reverse. Good VF. The obverse show signs of being overstruck. Extremely rare.

Friedman and Schaefer note in their article in The Celator (“A Closer Look–Distinguishing Similar Roman Republican Coins: Part II–Anonymous Victoriati,” April 2011, p. 14) that “A cataloguer is not likely to encounter an example of Cr. 90/2 as these, too, are very rare. Jupiter’s face is handsome but elongated, and his beard has mostly tufts composed of small hooks. His hair is perpendicular with very long curls. The trophy’s sword does not protrude to the left of the shield. The trophy has a small skirt but no greaves or base.”

Brinkman and Debernardi associate this issue with the RRC 95 VB series due to a shared reverse die with RRC 95/1c (anonymous VB), which through a die-match chain links to a VB RRC 95/1a Victoriatus.
