M. Plaetorius M.f. Cestianus. 57 BC. AR Denarius (17.5mm, 3.87 g, 6h). Rome mint. Young male head (Bonus Eventus) right with flowing hair; [club] behind / Winged caduceus. Crawford 405/5; Sydenham 807; CNR Plaetoria 8/12 (same dies; obv. symbol clava); Plaetoria 5; Type as RBW 1453. Toned with a few light scratches beneath toning, flatly struck in areas, obverse struck off center. VF.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection. Ex Prof. Dr. Hildebrecht Hommel Collection; Kress 141 (23 October 1967), lot 324; Kress 138 (17 April 1967), lot 827.

Both the obverse and reverse are die matches to Banti (CNR) Plaetoria 8/12, thus the obverse symbol is a club. Karl Kress auctions from the 1960s are usually illustrated in Banti, but this coin is evidently not because of the unclear symbol, so it was an enjoyable challenge to die match it. [Andrew McCabe]
