Dated 1804 (though struck in London by Sir Edward Thomason, 1820). NAPOLEON EMP. ET ROI., laureate head right / DESCENTE EN ANGLETERRE, Hercules wrestling an anquipede monster; in exergue, FRAPPE A LONDRES/ EN 1804. Edge: plain. Bramsen 365. Brown surfaces, some marks in reverse field. EF.

From the David J. Fleischmann Collection.

The reverse type is copied from a French medal proposed for the aborted invasion of England that Napoléon intended to have struck in London. As the attack was called off, the original medal was never struck. After the return of the Bourbon dynasty, a number of medal dies were acquired by Sir Edward Thomason who made numerous restrikes.
