SICILY, Syracuse. Second Democracy. 466-405 BC. Electrotype “Tetradrachm” (24mm, 15.97 g, 2h). British Museum electrotype (marked with ligate MB on reverse). Nike as charioteer, holding reins in both hands, driving fast quadriga right; above, Nike flying left, crowning charioteer with laurel wreath held in her extended right hand; in exergue, dolphin and Skylla, holding trident, swimming right, EVΘ before / Head of Arethousa left, wearing wreath of grain ears, and necklace with lion head pendant; EVMENO-V below neck; four dolphins around. Head, Guide –; cf. BM no. 1946,0101.1381 (for prototype). Toned. As made.

Duplicate from the England - McFadden Electrotype Collection.

The fact that this electrotype was made from a coin that the BM acquired in 1946, illustrates that electrotypes were produced by the museum well into the 20th century.
