EGYPT, Alexandria. Trajan. AD 98-117. Æ Drachm (29mm, 20.69 g, 12h). Dated RY 13 (AD 109/110). Laureate bust right, wearing aegis / Egyptian sphinx with Uraeus tail standing right on [serpent], wearing composite crown and crocodile pectoral plate; on its back, griffin(?) standing rightl; L IΓ (date) above. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) 1180 & Suppl. Pl. 7, no. 127; K&G 27.271; RPC 4432.2; Emmet 599.13 (R5 = Dattari 1180). Brown and green patina with touches of red, roughness, a few cleaning marks. Near Fine. Extremely rare. This coin appears to have a griffin standing right on the sphinx’s back, which may just be an artifact (extra metal, encrustation, etc.), but if correct, would make it an unpublished type. |
