From the Collection of Simon Bendall.

Richard Arundell was Surveyor of the King’s Private Roads from 1731-1737. According to Bendall, the Type II passes were the most commonly issued and subsequently, the most frequently copied. Of all the specimens examined by the author, 60% were deemed to be forgeries and a survey of those offered through auction in recent years shows that a number of these are also contemporary forgeries rather than the scarcer, official issues.
