There remains some debate over the authenticity of the few known examples of the later, silver King’s Road passes. One view is that they are in fact twentieth century forgeries produced by the well known collector, dealer and suspected forger William Charles Wells. However, with the discovery of this piece, engraved in a contemporary style and to a well-known contemporary figure, Bendall throws some doubt on this assertion. Lord Grenville (1759–1834) was an English Tory politician and son of Prime Minister George Grenville, whose controversial Stamp Act imposed on the American colonies led, eventually, to the American Revolution.
