ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of Mercia. Offa. 757-796. AR Penny (17mm, 1.28 g, 1h). Light coinage, portrait type. London mint; Lulla, moneyer. Struck circa 785-792/3. + · OF:FA · R·ЄX +, head right / + L·: VL ·: ·: L ·: ·: Λ ·:divided by four large pellet encircled bosses; the inner circle contains a cross over a smaller saltire with curved bars in angles. Cf. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 82 (for similar penny); Chick 65e (this coin); SCBI 20 (Mack), 564 (same dies); SCBI 67 (BM), 27; North 313; SCBC 905. Some porosity. Toned. Good VF. Rare.

The precise date when the change to the new style penny took place is uncertain. The broader flans gave free reign to the Anglo-Saxon engravers to produce portraits of such character and quality that English coins are the most artistic of late 8th century.
