Julia Domna. Augusta, AD 193-217. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.44 g, 12h). Alexandria mint. Struck under Septimius Severus, AD 194. IVLIA DO MNA AVG, draped bust right / E T I A II, Pietas (or Roma?) seated left, holding palladium and scepter. Bickford-Smith p. 56; RIC IV –; BMCRE –; RSC –. Ragged edge. VF. Very rare.

From the Richard McAlee Collection.

Though sometimes described as a hybrid with a reverse intended for denarii of Septimius Severus, Bickford-Smith notes that, “where types appear for more than one ruler at the same time, each ruler generally uses his or her own reverse dies, and die-sharing between rulers at this mint is the exception. Consequently, it is not correct to designate, say, Septimius Venus or Julia legionary denarii as ‘hybrid.’” (Bickford-Smith p. 57)
