217a Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. AR Denarius (17.5mm, 2.72 g, 7h). Uncertain eastern mint. 1st issue, AD 222. IMP SEV AEXAND AVG (sic), laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / [SAL]VS PVBLICA, Salus seated left, feeding serpent from patera; star to upper left. RIC IV 298 var. (bust type, obv. legend); BMCRE 1016 var. (same); RSC 535a var. (same). Thin flan crack. Good VF. Interesting engraver’s error omitting the L in ALEXAND.

(rev. legend spacing); RSC 561. Lightly toned. VF.

(same); RSC 561 var. (same). Lightly toned. Near EF. Rare variety.
