242a Gordian III. AD 238-244. AR Antoninianus (22mm, 4.11 g, 6h). Antioch mint. 1st series, AD 238-239. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / PROVIDENTIA AVG, Providentia standing left, holding grain ears and cornucopia; altar to left. Bland, Gordian III 53; RIC IV 197; RSC 307. Lightly toned. Good VF.

A note from the collector: The object below Providentia’s outstretched hand resembles a small child with uplifted arms more than an altar. Compare to the altar on lot 234.

242b Gordian III. AD 238-244. AR Antoninianus (24mm, 4.11 g, 6h). Antioch mint. 1st series, AD 238-239. IMP CAES M ANT GORDIANVS AVG, radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / ROMAE AE TERNAE, Roma seated left on shield, holding Victory and spear. Bland, Gordian III 56; RIC IV 200; RSC 312a. Lightly toned. VF.
