PTOLEMAIC KINGS of EGYPT. Ptolemy I Soter. 305/4-282 BC. Æ Chalkous (13mm, 1.73 g, 12h). Alexandreia mint. Series 2D, circa 294-282 BC. Diademed head of Alexander III, with short hair, right / Eagle standing right on thunderbolt; monogram to left. CPE B80; Svoronos –; SNG Copenhagen –. Brown surfaces, some roughness. Good VF. Very rare.

Although Lorber identifies the portrait here as Alexander III, this example has facial features that are reminiscent of Ptolemy. Whether this is an unrecorded new variety, though, is speculative, as the other examples of this rare issue also show some variation in the portrait, such that it may just be typical for the issue.
