John Comnenus-Ducas. As emperor of Thessalonica, 1237-1242. BI Aspron Trachy (23mm, 1.15 g, 6h). Series II. Thessalonica mint. St. Demetrius enthroned facing on backless throne, sword across lap / John and the Theotokos standing facing and holding between them staff topped by cross-in-circle and triangular decoration. S. Bendall, “Notes on the Coinage in the name of John Comnenus-Ducas of Thessalonica (AD 1237-44),” in NC 162 (2002), 1; DOC 1 var. (module); CLBC 14.1.2; LBC –; SB 2187. Dark green patina, scratches, some weakness on obverse. Good VF. Very rare and with clear legend.
