Struck circa 1163-1188, or later. + BOANVIIDVS (sic), bust left, wearing Norman helmet decorated with cross pattée and chainmail coif; double barred A with pellet at each end; three bar S with pellets / + ANTIOCNIA (sic), cross pattée; crescent in second quarter. Metcalf, Crusades –; cf. CCS 78a (Bohémond IV; for type). Spotty toning, areas of weak strike at periphery. Good VF. Apparently unique for this class with no symbols flanking head. |
