An Italian nobleman who was related to the Byzantine Lascaris emperors, Giovanni Paolo Lascaris di Ventimiglia e Castellar, was elected Grandmaster over two other candidates. Having spent much of his early life among the Knights in a priory and being responsible for a wide range of monastic functions, Lascaris, as Grandmaster, ran afoul of the Maltese population when he imposed a ban on women wearing masks, or attending masked balls during carnivale. He is also remembered for the Knights’ brief attempt to establish overseas colonies in the Caribbean.
