SASANIAN KINGS. Vahrām (Bahram) V. AD 420-438. AR Drachm (30.5mm, 4.20 g, 3h). GWL mint. Bust right, wearing mural crown with korymbos set on crescent, and ribbons / Fire altar with head of Vahrām (Bahram) right on shaft; flanked by two attendants, each wearing crown with korymbos and pellet before feet, l’st in Pahlavi on altar shaft; mint signature and crescent flaniking flames. SNS Type Ib2/1, Var. 1 and pl. 63, A14; cf. Sunrise 920. Choice EF. A well struck and lustrous example, rare thus.

From the Style Collection.

Like their Persis predecessors, Sasanian kings are differentiated by their personal crowns. This drachm, especially with its detailed bust, is rare and choice, because it lacks the typical double and triple strikes normally found on this issue. It is certainly one of the finest examples of a Vahrām (Bahram) V drachm that this cataloger has seen.

“This coin is really nice on both the obverse and reverse.” (From the consignor)
