An example of what Grierson describes as the ‘characteristic Visigothic coin type is that established by Leovigild (in the mid 580s) with a facing royal bust on each side of the coin. It was maintained without exception throughout the reigns of Leovigild’s ten successors down to 650.’ Grierson, p. 22
